MACI Knee Cartilage Repair

A unique way to repair cartilage
using your own cells.

Whether you’ve already had arthroscopic knee surgery or are looking to pursue further treatment, MACI will use a biopsy of your cartilage to grow new cells. These new cells will then create durable repair tissue for your damaged knee cartilage.

How MACI works:

If you and your doctor choose MACI, the treatment starts with a minimally invasive arthroscopic procedure to collect a small sample of your cartilage cells (chondrocytes). That sample is sent to a laboratory where the cells are expanded. The cultured chondrocytes are then seeded onto a specialized collagen membrane to create the MACI implant used in your surgery.

The method your surgeon uses to place the MACI implant depends on the size and location of the defect. Implant delivery may be done through a mini-arthrotomy or a minimally invasive arthroscopic approach.

During the implant procedure, the surgeon first prepares the knee by removing the damaged cartilage. The MACI implant is trimmed to match the defect, placed into the prepared site, and secured. Individual results may vary.
